Case of the Mondays - On this rather bland Monday, I was stretched thin for inspiration.  Whenever I am, I go to SUNO.

SUNO is one of my favourite fashion labels, ever. To know me, is to know I love prints on prints, combined with boxy, geometric shapes and a flattering silhouette…which is SUNO.  While pursuing SUNO, I came across a talented artist by the name of Jamilla Okubo.  At first glance of her textile, illustration and painting designs, I was hooked, not knowing much about her.

Upon further investigation, I became more obsessed with her beautiful prints, colour schemes and daring use of prints which evoke a ‘less is more’ feeling in her work.  Jamilla draws inspiration from her heritage (Kenyan, Trinidadian and American), whilst exploring the range of the African Diaspora fashion and textiles.

Above, are examples of her paintings, textile designs and her take on the upcoming S/S 2014 SUNO NY collection. Here you can see Jamilla’s heritage fuel her inspiration and spill out into a beautiful collage of bold and aesthetically pleasing fashion. Jamilla’s designs are simply, beautiful. Today, on this bland Monday, I got a boost of visual happiness and education about traditional Kanga textiles from this brilliant artist. I hope you enjoy her work as much as I do.

A quote from Jamilla about her work with SUNO…

Jamilla Okubo Spring-Summer 2014 for SUNO NY.

"The theme behind my collection, “Jamilla Anyango”, is transforming the style and drape of the Kanga Fabric re-interpreted into modern American, high end fashion-street style fashion inspired by the brand SUNO NY. My collection is inspired by my cultural heritage, both my Kenyan side and American side. My father is from Nairobi, Kenya, and my mother is from Washington, D.C. It is a mix of today’s clean cut style of high end fashion, and the traditional wear of the Kanga."

Happy Monday! May your week be full of colour!

Tumblr has become one of my mecca’s for art and illustration from up and comers and established artists of all genres and mediums and it’s also where I discovered Jamilla Okuboawhile back.  Upon scrolling down over Jamilla’s work in my dashboard I was taken aback and enveloped in both familiarity of topic and originality in her use of silhouettes, mixed media and saturated colors.  Her latest…

Forgive me but my responses are very raw—- communication is my weakness. 😂

I really went into depth about where I come from and how that influences my work. I really tried to clear certain assumptions about my background and how I grew up.
